A heartbreaking look at life behind the ICE detention centers in Northern Illinois

In my experience, most people that live in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, rarely speak of the fact that there are two major ICE Detention centers in their backyard in McHenry County and Kankakee County (Kankakee's Jerome Combs Detention Center began housing immigrants in removal proceedings this year). The authors of this article do a wonderful job of not only humanizing those detained, but also the countless volunteers working to improve their lives and protect their human rights. I found the words of Elena Segura (Director of the Archdiocese of Chicago's Office for Immigrant Affairs and Immigrant Education) particularly moving when she stepped on a bus full of people ready to depart and said, "Hope goes with you. Embrace hope...You are not alone."
